Diabetic Eye Disease

If you have diabetes, regular eye exams are an important part of protecting your vision. Diabetes can affect the small blood vessels in your eyes, sometimes without any warning signs. An eye exam can catch early changes before they become serious, helping to prevent vision loss and keep your eyes healthy over time.

How Does Diabetes Affect the Eye?

Diabetes can damage the tiny blood vessels in your eyes, potentially leading to blurry vision, increased risk of cataracts, and a condition called diabetic retinopathy that can cause vision loss if left untreated.

A diabetic eye exam helps us spot early signs of eye damage from diabetes. We use a special dilating eye drop to widen your pupils, then use advanced imaging to look for tiny blood vessel changes. These can include microaneurysms (small bulges in blood vessels), bleeding, or swelling that signal potential diabetic retinopathy – often before you experience any vision problems.

Symptoms of Diabetic Eye Disease

  • Blurry Vision - Fluctuating blood sugar levels can cause the lens to swell, leading to temporary or permanent vision changes.
  • Dark or Empty Areas in Vision - Diabetic retinopathy can cause vision loss, creating dark spots or areas that seem to disappear from your visual field.
  • Difficulty Seeing Colors - Damage to blood vessels can affect color perception, making colors appear less vibrant or distinguished.
